O2 boss Campbell to join Formula One

David Campbell, chief executive of AEG Europe and the man responsible for turning round the fortunes of London’s Millennium Dome into the successful O2 Arena, is joining Formula One to handle sponsorship and hospitality for the sport’s commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone.

According to Sky News, Campbell will become the managing director of Allsport Management, the arm of Formula One which handles trackside advertising and sponsorship, merchandising and corporate hospitality.

The switch makes Campbell a likely contender to replace 80-year-old Ecclestone as the chief executive of Formula One.

Campbell will replace Paddy McNally, the Allsport founder, who is likely to become the company’s non-executive chairman.

A former boss of Virgin Radio, Campbell joined AEG Europe six years ago and has become one of the most recognisable faces in the British media industry.
