Attending the 2008 Sport Accord Convention, Prince Feisal explained the rationale for the name change: “I have been delighted with the progress that Peace Through Sport has made since we launched and hosted the pilot camp in 2007.
“Over 50 projects are currently planned and being implemented by our pilot camp delegates, ‘Generations for Peace Pioneers’; those completed so far have been a great success, reaching divided communities in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Sri Lanka and Sudan.
“This has further encouraged us to step up our global roll-out programme to reach more countries and more delegates than ever before to bring together hundreds of thousands of children and young people in communities who need it most.
“However I decided that to realise the full potential of this period of growth will require a more robust name. A name that reflects the future benefits that will come from young people growing up together in peaceful co-existence, infused with the values of peace.”
Prince Feisal went on to outline the plans for the global expansion of Generations For Peace. These include: two training camps for 2008, to involve more countries and more delegates than ever before; one camp to be led by the OCA in Asia; a fund to kick-start delegates’ projects; the redevelopment of training materials with leading academics; a partnership with Relief International Organisation; and the launch of Generations For Peace Institute later this year.
