SABC loses out in Premier Soccer League TV rights battle

South African public-service broadcaster SABC’s final attempt to hold on to the Premier Soccer League’s television rights failed.

An arbitration hearing ruled in favour of the Premier Soccer League (PSL), which had sold the rights to pay-broadcaster SuperSport in a five-year deal worth R1-billion.

The SABC had applied for several high court injunctions attempting to prevent the PSL from going to market with its broadcast rights, claiming it was obliged to offer the rights first to the SABC.
