SOUTH AFRICA SOCCER LEAGUE IN TALKS WITH SABC

South Africa’s Premier Soccer League is in talks with public-service broadcaster the SABC in order to try and negotiate a compromise in the row over the league’s TV rights.

The PSL has already awarded its live rights to pay-broadcaster Supersport International in a deal worth more than R1-billion. The award was slammed by the SABC and prompted a political outcry.

That deal cannot be reversed but the PSL is seeking a compromise solution that would potentially give the SABC role to play.

PSL chairperson Irvin Khoza is reported in the South African press to have said in terms of the broadcasting act the issue of free-to-air was "very important". He said there were elements in the agreement with Supersport that would impact on the free-to-air channels, therefore there was merit in having a discussion.
