FOOTBALL GREEN LIGHT FOR GOAL LINE TECHNOLOGY

Football’s lawmakers have agreed to introduce goal-line technology to determine whether a goal has been scored.

The International Football Association Board agreed that technical research should be undertaken with a view to introducing suitable devices into the game’s rules.

Brian Barwick, chief executive of the Football Association, which hosted the IFAB meeting said, “we all believe goal line technology is the right way forward, and there is a general consensus on that.”

There have already been trials with different detection systems in Italy’s Serie A and at FIFA junior tournaments.

The IFAB said that, inn order to gain their and FIFA’s approval, any system must be foolproof; technology must only be concerned with goal line decisions; any ‘goal’ or ‘no-goal’ signal to the referee has to be instant and the signal will be communicated solely to the match officials.
