IPL sells international internet and mobile rights

Dubai-based IT services company netlinkblue acquired international rights to stream IPL matches live on the internet and mobile phones in a 10-year deal believed to be worth nearly $50 million.

Key territories covered by the deal are India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the UAE, and the many Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi ex-patriate communities worldwide. The deal not include the US, UK, South Africa and New Zealand, which are covered by existing deals with broadcasters.

Netlinkblue will offer three-tiers of access for online television viewers. A day pass will cost $2.72 (£1.37), a league pass for the duration of each IPL tournament will cost $40.57, and an annual pass will cost $51.46. As well as live streaming of matches, there will be a 72-hour online catch-up service.

Netlinkblue originally intended to launch the internet streaming service on its own website, but has now linked up with Live Current Media (LCM), which is developing the official IPL website , making all internet television coverage available through one portal.

LCM offers clips of highlights and access to archive content after netlinkblue’s 72-hour catch-up television window. As part of LCM's deal with the IPL it is forming a Getty Images-style picture and video syndication service for other media outlets to purchase content. The majority of the content within the official IPL website remains free to access.
