Glasgow 2014 has named children’s charity Unicef as the first global charity partner of the Commonwealth Games.
As part of the agreement, Scotland’s multiple Olympic champion cyclist Sir Chris Hoy will appear alongside singer Nicole Scherzinger in a short film to be shown during the opening ceremony for the multi-sport event on July 23.
The film will invite spectators and television viewers around the world to make a donation via a text number or url to Unicef’s efforts to improve the lives of millions of children across the Commonwealth.
Footage of Hoy (right of picture) and Scherzinger on their recent Unicef trips to Malawi and Guyana respectively will feature in the film, which also includes contributions from cricket superstar Sachin Tendulkar and former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grevemberg said: “This is a ground-breaking and profoundly important opportunity for the people of the Commonwealth to come together to put their children first and improve lives. Glasgow 2014 has had so many firsts in terms of Games and again we are making history, we are changing the conversation. We are taking an opening ceremony and elevating it into something which will not just be experienced by people but will leave a lasting legacy for the young people of Scotland and across the Commonwealth.”
