Changing Channels - How OTT video is reshaping sports media

This report was commissioned by SportBusiness International from Nakono, a UK-based company that specialises in information and data on the digital economy.

Based on interviews with media and sports industry executives, and their own data and modelling, Nakono analyse and predict how the rise of OTT (over-the-top) television viewing - essentially, television delivered via the internet - will affect sports media.

Questions tackled within include:

  • When it comes to sports media rights, there can be no doubt that OTT services represent a threat to certain parties in the value chain. But who will be impacted, and how?
  • Most TV markets have traditionally been dominated by a small number of major players, who account for the majority of sports rights revenues. How will OTT change this orderly picture, if at all?
  • Given that the pay-TV industry in many markets is mature and facing structural change, just how sustainable is its business model, and what will be the impact on rights-holders?
  • At what point will branded OTTs enter the premium sports rights market?
  • Premium sports rights-holders have enjoyed steady, growing rights revenues for a decade or more. But given the structural upheaval underway in so many other parts of the media sector where disruptive forces are at work, will the future be as rosy?
