In the first in a series of five mini reports by SportBusiness International Knowledge Centre on the key themes and findings from the Ultimate Sports Cities 2014 awards, head judge Rachael Church-Sanders takes a closer look at the category of Event Strategy, alongside fellow judges Terrence Burns, managing director at Teneo Strategy; Hazem Galal, partner at PwC; and Lars Haue-Pedersen, managing director at TSE Consulting.

Areas that were considered when ranking the cities in this category included:

Q: How supportive does the local government of a city appear to be and does the city have national government support once it has won an event?

Q: Has a city made its ambitions transparent by creating an official entity that bids for major sports events and advises on hosting them?

Q: Has the city got a robust strategy for bidding for major sports events and does it recognise its own capabilities without punching above its weight?

There are many factors that make a city a world-class events host and many cities that believe they have what it takes when it comes to staging major events. Over the last decade, the process of bidding for major events and subsequently hosting them has become more sophisticated, with cities realising that they need to tick an increasing list of boxes to establish whether costs are worth the returns.

Melbourne was the top ranked city in the 2014 Ultimate Sports Cities rankings in the category of Event Strategy. Melbourne's Victorian Major Events Company (VMEC) is one of the world’s leading events acquisition groups. Developed in 1991, VMEC is recognised as a competitive and highly successful organisation that has secured countless sporting and cultural events for Melbourne’s major events calendar.

Copenhagen was ranked third in the 2014 Ultimate Sports Cities rankings in the category of Event Strategy. The city has a dedicated event organisation called Wonderful Copenhagen Events, and a strategy for attracting events based on factors including: city branding, economic impact, national pride, volunteering, involvement, activation and environmental impact.

Calgary was ranked fourth in the 2014 Ultimate Sports Cities rankings in the category of Event Strategy. The Calgary Sport Tourism Authority (CSTA) is responsible for bidding for sports events for the city and is reflective of the city’s pervasive sporting culture. The CSTA is a collaboration of leaders in sport, business, government and tourism who are mandated to provide advice, due diligence and strategic direction in evaluating and attracting sports events.

London was ranked fifth in the 2014 Ultimate Sports Cities rankings in the category of Event Strategy. The Greater London Authority (GLA) leads the strategy for sports events in London and oversees the bid process for any major sports event. An organisation called London & Partners assists in winning and promoting major events for London to generate economic benefit.
