West Ham launches Basset & Gold eSports Cup

Premier League club West Ham United has teamed up with shirt sleeve partner Basset & Gold to launch a Fifa 19 game tournament open to the public.

Basset & Gold, the club’s Official Investment and Esports Partner, will title sponsor the Basset & Gold eSports Cup, open to players on Xbox and PS4.

The best 16 players (eight on PS4 and eight on Xbox) will be invited to a Grand Final held at the London Stadium on November 18, where the winner will receive £10,000 from the prize pool of £25,000.

West Ham United were the first UK team to sign an esports player in 2016, while the London Stadium hosted the first esports tournament involving professional clubs in the same year.

Earlier this week, West Ham stars Felipe Anderson and Adrian battled it out with a game of ‘No Rules’ Fifa 19 which was streamed live on Twitch.

The Premier League launched an esports competition – the ePremier League – based on the Fifa 19 game last week. The competition starts in January and will see two UK-based competitors from each of the 20 clubs reach the final.

A West Ham spokesperson told Sports Sponsorship Insider that the two tournaments are unconnected and there is no significance in the proximity of the two announcements.
