Tokyo 2020 attracts 26 applications for Additional Event Programme

The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee has received a total of 26 applications from international sports federations proposing events to be included in the summer Olympic Games in five years' time.

The application process for additional events at the Games was opened on May 8, with federations recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) given until June 8 to put forward their proposals. Organisers in Japan can select more than one additional sport for inclusion at Tokyo 2020.

Sports represented in the first phase of applications comprise air sports, American football, baseball/softball, billiards, bowls, bowling, bridge, chess, dancing, floorball, flying disc, karate, korfball, netball, orienteering, polo, racquetball, roller sports, climbing, squash, sumo wrestling, surfing, tug of war, underwater sports, wushu, waterski and wakeboard.
