An investigation has been opened by Brazil’s Supreme Court into Eduardo Paes, the former Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, over allegations of financial impropriety in relation to contracts associated with last year’s Olympic Games.
Justice Edson Fachin of the Supreme Court has authorised investigations into a number of the country’s most influential political figures, including Paes (pictured), who was a high-profile figure before and during the Rio 2016 Games.
According to court documents released today (Wednesday), Paes was named in plea bargain testimony by former executives at engineering company Odebrecht, the Reuters news agency reported.
Paes is alleged to have solicited payments of more than R15m (€4.5m/$4.75m) in return for Olympic-related contracts, the report said. A representative of Paes described the allegations as “absurd.”
