The Rugby League International Federation (RLIF) has announced plans to introduce a nine-a-side World Cup tournament in 2019, while Sydney will host the Emerging Nations World Championship.
The RLIF detailed the plans at its board meeting yesterday (Tuesday). The Nines World Cup will complement England’s tour to Australia and New Zealand in 2019.
The RLIF said expressions of interest to host the event have been received, and a full report will be presented at the body’s next board meeting on May 9.
Upon the conclusion of the 2019 event, the RLIF will make a decision on the future of the tournament. “Following an evaluation of the 2019 RLIF Nines World Cup the board will review whether the 2023 RLIF Global Event should be a Nines World Cup or a 13-a-side event,” an RLIF statement read.
