River Plate dials up shirt sponsorship deal with Huawei

Chinese telecommunications company Huawei has been named as an official sponsor of Argentinian Primera División football club River Plate.

The two-year deal will cover the remainder of the 2016-17 season, as well as the 2017-18 campaign.

Under the agreement, Huawei’s branding will feature on the sleeves of River’s playing shirts. The company will also receive advertising exposure at Estadio Monumental, the club’s home ground in Buenos Aires.

George Zhangzhe, chief executive of Huawei in Argentina and Uruguay, said. “Sports sponsorships are something we are doing globally to help us get closer to our consumers and make them feel that Huawei is a local, nearby brand, and is committed to remain and grow with them.”

The Argentinian arm of Spanish bank BBVA currently serves as River’s main shirt sponsor.

In July, Huawei agreed a similar deal with River’s arch rival, Boca Juniors. The company’s extensive portfolio of football partnerships also includes deals with Atlético Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund.
