RedeTV pounces for Premier League rights

Brazilian commercial broadcaster RedeTV has acquired rights for football’s English Premier League.

RedeTV secured the rights in a sublicensing deal with pay-television broadcaster ESPN Brasil, which has rights for the competition through to the conclusion of the 2021-22 season.

RedeTV will be able to show exclusive live coverage of one match per week on free-to-air television, according to Brazilian news website Meio e Mensagem.

The rights will cover the 2018-19 season, with RedeTV’s coverage scheduled for Saturday afternoons local time in Brazil.

The acquisition has been greeted with shock in the Brazilian media, with RedeTV having had a modest sports-rights portfolio in recent years, particularly in football.
