PG&E to power Super Bowl 50

US natural gas and electric utilities firm Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has struck a deal to become a partner of the host committee for this year’s Super Bowl, the championship game of American football league the NFL.

Super Bowl 50 will feature the Carolina Panthers against the Denver Broncos at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on February 7.

Under the agreement, San Francisco-based PG&E will serve as the official clean energy partner of the host committee and power the Super Bowl City fan village that will welcome hundreds of thousands of supporters to the area ahead of the game.

PG&E will also open a number of emergency response centres in the local area in order to respond to any incidents, should they occur, at events before, during and after the Super Bowl.

According to the Yahoo Finance website, the host committee for this year’s Super Bowl has received no funding from local government or tourism authorities and has instead been reliant on money from sponsors.

The group of sponsors, which includes Apple and taxi service Uber, has raised $50m (€45.9m) for the committee.
