Petronas signs up as latest SEA Games sponsor

Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas has agreed a deal to sponsor this year’s edition of the Southeast Asian Games multi-sport event, which will take place in Kuala Lumpur.

The deal will be worth between RM7.5m (€1.6m/$1.7m) and RM15m, and names Petronas as a platinum sponsor and the official fuel partner of the Games.

Under the agreement, Petronas will provide energy solutions for 300 official Games vehicles and will also be involved in the promotion and marketing of the event.

In addition, official Games merchandise such as plush toys, tumblers and fridge magnets will be sold at selected Petronas stores.

Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said: “Petronas will be issuing a special edition KL2017 Kad Mesra which will be available at selected Petronas stations nationwide from June onwards.

“We’re also in the midst of discussing some advertising initiatives leading up to the Games as well as Petronas involvement in the upcoming KL2017 Torch Run which kicks off on May 13.”

Jamaluddin said the organising committee has so far raised RM71m in sponsorship. The figure represents more than 88 per cent of the committee’s overall target.

Petronas joins Telekom Malaysia, FBT, NAZA and Ajinomoto as platinum sponsors of the Games.

The SEA Games will take place from August 19-30, with the ASEAN Para Games to follow from September 19-23.
