Oculus gives World Cup matches VR treatment

US technology company Oculus has said it will provide live streaming of select Fifa World Cup matches through Oculus Venues, its new app for social co-viewing.

Oculus, which is owned by social media company Facebook, said it has partnered with several broadcasters across the world for the venture, detailing a lineup of four matches that will be available for free from the Fox Sports division of US network Fox via Venues.

These are Sunday’s match between Germany and Mexico, the June 20 clash between Portugal and Morocco, the June 22 meeting of Brazil and Costa Rica, and the England v Panama encounter on June 24.

Oculus said it has also partnered with Telemundo – holder of Spanish-language rights to the World Cup in the US – as well as UK public-service broadcaster the BBC, French commercial broadcaster TF1, Greek public-service broadcaster ERT and Australian public-service broadcaster SBS.

Pan-regional pay-television broadcaster DirecTV will also provide the service in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.
