New player seeks to challenge for football rights in Czech Republic

Czech broadcast group TV Barrandov has said it is interested in acquiring rights to the First League, the top division of club football in the country.

The Pragosport agency currently owns rights to the league, under a deal that is set to run through to 2020. Pragosport sublicenses the rights to pay-television broadcaster O2 Sport and public-service broadcaster Česká Televize.

The Fotbal.cz website notes that while TV Barrandov currently has no major sporting interest, Daniel Köppl, executive director of the Empresa Media group to which it belongs, said it is “really interested” in broadcasting football and submitting a bid.

The First League is set to revert to a new format for its 2018-19 season, and Fotbal.cz said its leadership is keen to increase the value of its rights by providing a greater number of matches for television.

Pragosport is said to have put forward a four-year extension offer for a contract that would run through to 2024.
