MLB signs partner to aid communications at ballparks

Major League Baseball has entered into a multi-year partnership with business communications company Mitel in a move designed to enhance the technology offering at ballparks.

Mitel will be responsible for powering the league’s communications tools and connections across all 30 MLB ballparks in the US and Canada.

As part of the agreement, the existing 30 independent platforms for dugout, bullpen, video review rooms and press box communications will be transformed into one unified system featuring enhanced security and call recording capabilities. As a result, all communications conducted on phone lines will be able to be recorded and monitored to ensure compliance with MLB rules and regulations.

Mitel is already working with MLB and club technology departments to begin rolling out the technology at all 30 ballparks. The new systems and procedures are due to be in place in time for the opening day of the 2018 season on March 29.

The agreement also names Mitel as MLB’s presenting sponsor of league-wide instant replay reviews, and the official business technology and communications partner of the league.

"Mitel is a global leader in providing the kind of sophisticated, custom communications network that addresses the unique needs of Major League Baseball and our 30 clubs," Chris Marinak, MLB’s executive vice-president of strategy, technology and innovation, said.

"Mitel will provide a unified communications system featuring the latest technology across all 30 ballparks. We are delighted to welcome them as a new league partner."

Mitel also holds partnerships with MLB teams the Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants.
