Lagardère Sports linked to Maracanã deal

The Lagardère Sports agency has agreed a deal to assume the management contract for the iconic Maracanã stadium in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, according to multiple reports.

The Rio Times website said Lagardère will pay upwards of R$30m (€9m/$9.6m) to assume management responsibilities for the facility until 2048, with documents detailing the offer is set to be handed to Rio’s government and construction firm Odebrecht today (Friday).

Odebrecht is head of the Maracanã SA consortium that currently manages the stadium, but has come under heavy criticism in recent times with the venue having fallen into a poor state, just months after serving as the main centrepiece for Rio’s hosting of the 2016 summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
