Kuala Lumpur 2017 hits sponsorship target with latest deal

Malaysian pewter manufacturer Royal Selangor has agreed a deal to sponsor this year’s edition of the Southeast Asian Games multi-sport event, which will take place in Kuala Lumpur.

Royal Selangor will serve as the official medal partner of the Games. The company will provide more than 1,200 medals for the event as part of the agreement.

Royal Selangor partnered with the Malaysia Organising Committee (MASOC) earlier this year on the creation and design of the baton used during the event’s Rising Together Baton Run. The company also created the Games’ torch, which is currently travelling across Malaysia in the lead-up to the event.

Royal Selangor will also produce Games merchandise such as RIMAU figures, commemorative medals and collar pins.

Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin, confirmed that the organising committee has now exceeded its sponsorship target of RM80m (€16.6m/$18.8m). “To date, a total sponsorship of RM82.6m has been raised, exceeding the RM80m target of sponsorship in the form of cash, product and services,” he said.

“MASOC has managed to raise RM25m in cash while the overall sponsorship in kind currently stands at RM58m.”

The Games will take place from August 19-30, with the ASEAN Para Games to follow from September 17-23.
