The results of the referendum, released in the early hours of Tuesday morning, saw Nassau County residents vote against a measure which would have brought a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment destination to Long Island and guarantee the Islanders a home in the area through 2045.

Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano announced in June that the local authority had reached a lease agreement as part of its plans to create a new facility. However, the proposal was dependent on the backing of Monday’s public referendum with 57% of voters saying no to the project. The Islanders lease at the Coliseum, the second oldest venue in the NHL, runs through 2015 and despite his disappointment, Wang stated the franchise will honour its agreement.
