GoFundMe to support Special Olympics through new partnership

Social fundraising platform GoFundMe has entered into a global partnership with Special Olympics, the movement that seeks to empower athletes with intellectual disabilities.

The partnership will result in the creation of nearly 500 GoFundMe campaigns by teams and coaches, as well as Olympians, top professional athletes, YouTube stars and other influencers to support Special Olympics’ cause.

The campaigns will enable athletes to share their personal stories, while also aiding their journey to the 2017 Special Olympics World winter Games with expenses related to travel, training, equipment, coaching and accommodation.

“GoFundMe's mission is to empower people to help people, and Special Olympics has been helping to empower people with intellectual disabilities for almost 50 years,” GoFundMe chief executive Rob Solomon said. “It's an honour to share the stories of these competitors who have overcome obstacles.”

Over 2,700 athletes from more than 100 countries will compete in nine sports at the Games, which will take place in Graz, Schladming, Rohrmoos and Ramsau from March 14-25.
