Fox Sports takes rights to Holiday Bowl

The Fox Sports division of US network Fox has secured rights to this year’s Holiday Bowl US college American football game.

Fox Sports will broadcast live coverage of the game on FS1 and its Fox Deportes Spanish-language channel.

US sports broadcaster ESPN broadcast the annual Holiday Bowl each year since 1986, but its contract was not extended after the 2016 event.

According to the San Diego Tribune newspaper, ESPN last month said it was still in talks with organisers, despite not having included the game in its bowl schedule.

The newspaper said that the only slot available on ESPN’s schedule was December 26, but the game has not been played this early since switching to a post-Christmas date in 1986.

The 2017 Holiday Bowl will be the 40th edition of the game and is due to take place on December 28 at the Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California.
