Facebook swoops for LaLiga rights in Indian subcontinent – report

Social media company Facebook has acquired rights to LaLiga, the top division of Spanish club football, in the Indian subcontinent, according to the Inside Sport website.

The rights will reportedly cover the four-season cycle spanning 2018-19 to 2021-22.

If the report is accurate, Facebook will have dislodged the Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) media group, which broadcast LaLiga through to the end of the 2017-18 season. Citing SPN sources, Inside Sport said Sony was not prepared to meet the rights fee asked for a renewal.

Facebook’s latest apparent football rights acquisition comes after it reportedly secured the contract for the English Premier League in four Southeast Asian markets.

TV Sports Markets reported on June 22 that Facebook acquired rights to the Premier League in Vietnam for three seasons, from 2019-20 to 2021-22.

The agreement was struck at the same time as Facebook’s acquisition of Premier League rights in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. That deal will run for the same three seasons (TV Sports Markets 22:9).

Contacted by TV Sports Markets today (Monday), Facebook refused to comment on the latest reports.
