The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Alisports division of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba that will lead to esports featuring as a medal competition at the 2022 edition of its showpiece multi-sport event, the Asian Games.
The 2022 Games is due to take place in the Chinese city of Hangzhou and esports has become a focus of Alisports’ activities in recent months. Esports has already been added to the OCA’s 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG), which are being staged in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, this September, as a demonstration sport.
This initiative will be repeated for next year’s 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, before esports becomes an official medal sport in 2022. Under the new partnership, Alisports will also work closely with the OCA to develop the marketing of esports.
