Court blocks Periscope during Digiturk’s Super Lig coverage

Turkish pay-television broadcaster Digiturk has secured a court injunction to block live video-streaming service Periscope from being available during top-tier Super Lig football matches in the country.

Digiturk, which has exclusive rights to the Super Lig, secured the injunction from the Istanbul Intellectual and Industrial Property Rights court, according to the Anadolu news agency.

The injunction will be applicable from the start of the 2018-19 season on August 10.

The court said that the ruling could be viewed as a precedent for other platforms.

Digiturk had complained that coverage of games had been available on Periscope from fans watching at home or in the stadia.

Access to Periscope will be halted when Digiturk’s broadcasts of matches begins and will resume when the coverage concludes.
