Birmingham in pole position for Commonwealth Games

Birmingham is in pole position to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after the English city submitted the only confirmed bid for the multi-sport event by the deadline set by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).

The UK government confirmed its financial backing for the Games on Friday, a day before the CGF’s deadline for bids to be submitted. The CGF is seeking a host to replace the South African city of Durban, which had its staging rights stripped earlier this year due to financial difficulties.

However, in a statement, CGF chief executive David Grevemberg said that an update on the bidding process would be provided at the organisation’s board meeting in Sri Lanka this Thursday and Friday, with a final decision set to be made by the end of this year.
