FIBA Europe, the governing body for basketball in Europe, has elected Turgay Demirel as its new president, succeeding the late Olafur Rafnsson.

The loss of his remarkable energy, intellect and vision will be felt very deeply by the organisation and by all those in sport who share a passion for its future.

Olafur Rafnsson, president of FIBA (the International Basketball Federation) Europe, was last night found dead in his hotel room in Geneva.
