German online casino Wunderino.de has signed as the naming rights provider to the home venue of leading German handball club THW Kiel and as a sponsor of the team.
Wunderino.de will take up the arena naming rights from July 1 in a five-year deal with an option for a further five years.
The venue, formerly known as Sparkassen-Arena, will be called the Wunderino Arena. It will continue to host THW Kiel’s home games, as well as major concerts and other events.
It is reported that the Sparkasse savings bank was paying €300,000 ($325,580) per year for its naming rights agreement.
Stefan Wolf, chief executive of the concert and event company that operates the arena, said that the casino brand was a “legitimate company” in terms of its licensing credentials and would be a “reliable partner”.
Wunderino.de is licensed by the state of Schleswig-Holstein and aims to consolidate its presence in the region over the long-term.
Wolf also said there was a precedent for a gambling operator naming rights deal in the north German state in the form of the PokerStars.de stadium, the name given to the venue of fourth-tier Regionalliga Nord football club VfB Lübeck, from 2011-12 to 2012-13.
The team sponsorship will see Wunderino.de join THW Kiel’s roster at the start of this season and will run for the two years. The deal includes online gameday rights and rights to produce the ‘Wunderino fan show’ in the arena during home matches.
Wunderino.de will join eight team sponsors in the second tier of the handball club’s portfolio. The club’s main sponsor is petrol station brand Star. The kit supplier is Danish sportswear brand Hummel.
