World Athletics is seeking dates in 2022 for its World Championships to avoid clashing with the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics.
The Tokyo Olympic Games have been rescheduled to July 23 to August 8, 2021, meaning the World Athletics Championships scheduled for August 6 to 15, 2021 in Eugene, Oregon, will not take place as planned.
“This gives our athletes the time they need to get back into training and competition,” World Athletics said of the new Olympics dates in a statement on its website. “Everyone needs to be flexible and compromise.
“We are also in discussions with the Commonwealth Games Federation and the European Championships.” A Commonwealth Games is currently scheduled for July 27 to August 7 in Birmingham, UK, and a European Championships in athletics is scheduled for August 26-30 in Paris.
WA added: “We would like to thank our Oregon 21 Organising Committee, their stakeholders and our partners for their collaboration and willingness to explore all options.”
Last Friday, WA president Sebastian Coe had said the organisation was open to moving the World Championships to 2022, even if it meant going back-to-back with the World Championships scheduled for the following year in Budapest. The event is held every two years.
