World Athletics begins search for general counsel

World Athletics, the sport’s international governing body, has initiated a recruitment process for a director of legal and business affairs, general counsel.

The successful candidate will report to chief operating officer Vineesh Kochhar and will manage a team of three.

A deadline of April 30 has been set for applications in a role that entails responsibility for providing legal advice across all areas of World Athletics business.

Drafting, negotiating and managing a variety of commercial agreements will form part of the role, including those related to rights sales, event production, sponsorship activation, intellectual property, governance, ethics and compliance.

In September last year, World Athletics signed a 10-year international media-rights agreement with the Infront agency, which includes the sale of international rights to the Diamond League, from 2025.

World Athletics has targeted candidates with 12-to-15 years of post-qualified law experience and preferably experience in a general counsel position. An experienced IP lawyer with experience at sports federations or within the media and entertainment sectors is ideally sought.

The Monaco-based governing body made a prominent legal appointment two years ago when it recruited UK Sport’s Vijay Parbat as lead counsel, sports law and governance.

World Athletics recently appointed Danish Athletic Federation (DAF) chief executive Jakob Larsen as its director of competition and events, a role in which he will oversee the governing body’s new Global Calendar Unit.
