Women’s EuroBasket heads to Serbia, Latvia in 2019

The Fiba Europe division of the International Basketball Federation (Fiba) has awarded hosting rights for its 2019 Women’s EuroBasket national team tournament to Serbia and Latvia.

Under the hosting plan, Serbia will organise two Group Phase pools in the cities of Nis and Zrenjanin and the Final Phase in Belgrade. Latvia will stage two Group Phase pools in Riga.

During its session in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic, the Fiba Europe board heard presentations from Latvia, Russia and Serbia.

Fiba Europe said Russia and Serbia both presented strong candidacies for organising the Group and Final Phase while Latvia and Israel were candidates for the Group Phase only. Israel withdrew its candidacy shortly before the meeting.

Fiba Europe president Turgay Demirel said: “The board were very pleased to see that all hosting bids were of the highest quality and the presentations were prepared in a very professional manner. We would like to thank all three federations for their excellent work.”

The announcement was made as the 2017 Women’s EuroBasket, which has been hosted in Prague and Hradec Králové, came to a close yesterday (Sunday). Spain defeated France 71-55 in the final.
