The IMG agency has entered into an agreement with the promotional and management companies of world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko to represent and promote female boxing star Cecilia Brækhus.
Currently the unified world welterweight champion by virtue of holding the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO titles, Norway’s Brækhus and her own promotional companies – First Lady Promotions (FLP) and First Lady Sport (FLS) – will work alongside IMG, K2 Promotions and the Klitschko Management Group (KMG).
The consortium will work together to arrange and promote fights in Norway and abroad, while optimising media and sponsorship opportunities for the 33-year-old Brækhus. The Norwegian parliament recently reinstated boxing as a legal sport in the Scandinavian country, paving the way for Brækhus to fight in her homeland for the first time. The sport was banned in January 1982.
She said: “I am proud and honoured to be teaming up with Wladimir Klitschko’s management and IMG. This partnership will take my career to an even higher level. Together we will create even more historic boxing moments – both in Norway, for the first time in 33 years, and internationally. Working with the world's best within boxing, sport and media was an opportunity I simply could not say no to.”
Kristian Hysen, senior vice-president at IMG, added: “Cecilia is recognised as the best female boxer in the world and this is an exciting opportunity to work with her and Klitschko to increase awareness and optimise boxing and sponsorship opportunities, while promoting female boxing to a wider audience.”
Bernd Bönte, managing director of Klitschko Management Group, said the new consortium will target a fight for Brækhus on the undercard of a Wladimir Klitschko event.
