The world sanctioning body for the sport of Polo, The Federation Internationale De Polo (FIP) granted Australia the right to host this event which is held every three years. Previously, it has been held in Argentina, Germany, Chile, France and USA.
Said Steve Frazer, managing director of Cup organiser Octagon (Australia/NZ): “The sport has a prestigious heritage and will provide an exciting spectator event for all Australians. In addition to the fast-paced polo competition there will be exciting on-site entertainment. A number of high profile international guests are likely to attend the event.”
The Minister for Major Projects, John Pandazopoulos added: ?This government through Victoria Major Events Company, has secured an event that is expected to attract significant world news coverage, particularly within the countries competing in the championships.?
Eight of the world?s best polo teams (80 people and more than 250 horses), including USA, Canada, England, Italy, host nation Australia, and defending champions Argentina, will compete for the title.
