The United States Tennis Association has enjoyed a huge spike in ticket sales for the upcoming US Open in the wake of Serena Williams' recent announcement that she will retire from the sport after playing in the grand slam tournament.

“You talk about the Serena effect, it’s like a tsunami,” USTA spokesman Chris Widmaier told the New York Post. “Since people have learned of the news, we’ve sold, as of 3pm [on August 9], 13,000 tickets to the Open, including 4,500 or thereabouts for opening night.”
