The organising committee of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics said yesterday that tickets will be made available for worldwide sale in May.

Currently, only residents of Japan are eligible to purchase tickets, from the Tokyo 2020 official ticket website. From mid-May, people from overseas will be able to purchase tickets from their country’s authorised ticket re-sellers and official ticketing websites. The exact date has yet to be confirmed.

The tickets will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis, online as well as over the counter at ticketing booths across Tokyo. Non-residents of Japan can also purchase tickets at the ticketing booths.

Over 4.48 million tickets have already been sold to Japanese residents, in two phases of domestic Olympic ticket lotteries. An estimated 9 million tickets are available

Residents of Japan can apply tickets via postcard in a third lottery starting February 20 and March 13 for the Olympics and Paralympics, respectively.

Organisers are still considering when Paralympic tickets will be put on sale globally.
