Swiss launch national ice hockey cup

Switzerland will host a national ice hockey cup for the first time since 1966 after the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation announced the competition will start again from the 2014/15 season.

The Swiss Ice Hockey Cup will include 32 teams from the National League A and League B, with the first games of the five-round tournament starting in May 2014.

Swiss Ice Hockey Federation president Marc Furrer said: “Switzerland has a strong ice hockey league which deserves an adjoining cup competition. Ice hockey teams play for trophies – now, aside from the Swiss Championship, we have an additional title opportunity.

“Together with [marketing partners] InfrontRingier we have managed to develop a concept that perfectly complements the league and fits in with the exciting ice hockey culture of our country.”
