Steelers target cold-weather Super Bowl in 2023

NFL American football franchise the Pittsburgh Steelers have said they are planning to bid to host the 2023 Super Bowl at their Heinz Field home.

Steelers president Art Rooney II said the team has submitted an application to the NFL for Pittsburgh to be under consideration for the league’s championship game. The success of the 2014 Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey, the first game played outdoors in a Northern climate, has opened the door for other Northern cities to host the Super Bowl.

Indeed, Minneapolis’ U.S. Bank Stadium, the under-development home of the Minnesota Vikings, will stage the 2018 Super Bowl. However, that venue, unlike both MetLife Stadium and Heinz Field, includes a fixed roof and a Super Bowl in Pittsburgh would provide a true test of the NFL’s decision to embrace cold-weather markets for its showpiece game.

Rooney said: “The application is an early step in the bidding process, and we will continue to meet with representatives of the Mayor’s Office, County Executive’s Office, VisitPittsburgh, Allegheny Conference as well as other community leaders to review the requirements with the hopes of submitting our bid to host Super Bowl LVII in 2023.”

The NFL reviews all applications, and will meet with cities interested in 2018 to discuss logistics and venues available. To prepare for that meeting the Steelers said they are researching other regions, including sending representatives to Northern cities that have already hosted the game.

After reviewing applications the NFL Super Bowl Committee will select finalists and allow them to formally submit a bid for the game in 2018. NFL owners would vote on the location of Super Bowl LVII at their annual meeting in 2019.

In May, the NFL compiled a shortlist of five cities to host the 2019 and 2020 Super Bowls. The Louisiana city of New Orleans, Georgia’s state capital of Atlanta, as well as Florida cities Miami and Tampa were selected as potential hosts of the two games, with Los Angeles added at a later date. These proposals will be presented to NFL franchise owners for a vote in May next year.

This year’s Super Bowl took place at Arizona’s University of Phoenix Stadium, with the New England Patriots beating the Seattle Seahawks by a slender margin of 28-24.

The 2016 Super Bowl is scheduled to take place at the San Francisco 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium in California, before the event moves on to the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas in 2017 and U.S. Bank Stadium in 2018.
