Floorball has been confirmed as one of the 36 sports for the 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore, but karate, weightlifting and wrestling have not been named on the list.
The Singapore National Olympic Council announced that there will be 402 gold medals on offer across 36 sports, with equestrian events, waterskiing and rowing also taking place during the next edition of the Games. According to the Inquirer news service, the council’s secretary general Chris Chan said: “Of the 36, 34 are Asian games sports and 24 are Olympic sports.”
Floorball, which was a demonstration sport at the most recent edition of the Games in Myanmar last year, will be included as a medal event for the first time. Netball will also be included for the first time since it debuted in Malaysia in 2001.
The Games will take place from June 5-16 next year and will feature all 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as non-Asean state East Timor. Singapore last hosted the event in 1993.
