The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has appointed Potchefstroom, South Africa as host of its women’s Junior World Cup in 2021, and India as host of the men’s edition the same year.
The women’s tournament will be the first Junior World Cup to take place on the African continent.
Both tournaments are to take place towards the end of the year. The FIH said it would confirm the exact dates, and venue details for the Indian tournament, at a later stage.
The women’s tournament will involve two teams from Africa, one of which will be South Africa, as hosts. It will have three teams from Asia, six from Europe, two from Oceania and three from the Americas. The European qualifiers have already been selected, and are Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Russia, and England.
The men’s tournament will have two teams from Africa, four teams from Asia including hosts India, six from Europe, two from Oceania and two from the Americas. The European qualifiers have again already been selected, and are Germany, England, Netherlands, Spain, Belgium and France.
The other continental qualifiers will take place this year – Asian women’s qualifiers in April, Asian men’s qualifiers in June, African women’s and men’s qualifiers in June, and the Americas’ women’s and men’s qualifiers in December. The dates of the Oceania qualifiers are yet to be announced.
The last FIH Hockey Junior World Cups took place in 2016. Argentina won the women’s tournament in Santiago, Chile. India won the men’s tournament on home soil in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
