Lega Serie A, the organising body of the top division of Italian club football, has appointed Michele Ciccarese as its new marketing and commercial director.

Ciccarese will join the Lega on November 18 having served as head of the Italian arm of the GroupM ESP sports and entertainment agency since its launch in September 2016. He has been held the role of managing director of GroupM ESP Italy & Mena since January.

Ciccarese will bear particular responsibility for the Lega’s internationalisation project through the opening of new offices abroad. Luigi De Siervo, chief executive of Lega Serie A, last month revealed that the organisation will open an office in the US market.

Ciccarese boasts 12 years of experience with media and sponsorship agencies. He began his work in the sector in 2007 when he joined Dentsu Aegis Media’s offices in Milan as an account executive. In 2011, he took up a position in Italy with MEC (part of GroupM/WPP).

The Lega also made another senior appointment in October as Maria Solbiati, an experienced member of Sky Italia’s media-rights acquisitions team, took up the position of head of media. Solbiati switched from her role as the Italian pay-TV broadcaster’s head of sports media rights acquisitions and sales to assume the new post at the Lega’s Milan headquarters.
