US tennis legend Serena Williams has made her latest venture into the women’s fashion market with the launch of her own clothing line.
Williams (pictured) said the clothing line, which has been created under the ‘S’ brand, is “for all the ladies out there being awesome”, and the launch comes as the 36-year-old returned to grand slam action this week at the French Open.
The 23-time grand slam winner gave birth to her daughter in September and on Tuesday she defeated Kristyna Pliskova 7-6 6-4 in the first round at Roland Garros. Williams wore a black body suit created by her apparel partner Nike during the match and said the outfit was a statement for mums who, like herself, experienced a tough pregnancy.
Posting on her Twitter account yesterday (Wednesday), Williams wrote: “They say life is about timing. I learned this lesson at age 18, when I chose to play a light tennis schedule because I wanted to go to fashion school. Some criticised my decision, but I knew I had two loves – tennis and fashion – and had to find a way to make them coexist.”
Williams, who has worked with Nike and Home Shopping Network on apparel ventures in the past, went on to explain how she had always hoped to launch her own fashion line, adding that a number of ideas to potential partners had been rejected over the years. Her new line will feature a range of clothing, from casual wear to dresses.
She told the WWD website: “I’ve never been fully creative, so that’s what this is. I’ve always been limited. I’ve done things for HSN but I’ve always been limited, with the customer and with the fabric selection; (there were) things I couldn’t do. They gave me so much knowledge, though, and so much practice and so much training. And with Nike, obviously there are so many things I can’t do.”
Williams will face off against Australia’s Ashleigh Barty later today in the second round of the French Open, a tournament she has won three times in her career.
