San Siro to host Heineken Cup 2015 final

The ERC (European Rugby Cup) board has confirmed Milan’s San Siro stadium as host of the Heineken Cup 2015 final.

With 80,000 seats, the San Siro is Italy’s largest stadium, and also home to Italian Serie A football clubs AC Milan and Inter Milan. However, the San Siro will only host the rugby union tournament provided an agreement on a new European club rugby Accord for next season and beyond can be reached.

Following a disagreement over Heineken Cup revenue shares, top-flight rugby union tiers English Premiership Rugby, the French National Rugby League (LNR) and the RaboDirect Pro 12 have already announced their Rugby Champions Cup breakaway competition starting in the 2014/15 season.

ERC chairman Jean-Pierre Lux said: "We in are in a difficult period for European club rugby, and I hope that a solution can be found. Then we can look forward to 2015 and a celebration of 20 years of European club rugby in Milan. It would be a shame if Italian rugby lost such a major opportunity to promote the game in their country.”
