Mineral wool products manufacturer Rockwool Group has been unveiled as the presenting sponsor of a new Danish SailGP team, which will enter the fledgling sailing series in 2020.
Rockwool has signed a three-year partnership with SailGP, with the option to extend for a further three seasons.
Multi-time around-the-world sailor Nicolai Sehested will head up the team and Olympic silver medalist Jonas Høgh-Christensen has been brought in as team manager. The team will join six other national teams competing in the series.
Sehested has served as helmsman in two Ocean Race campaigns and was also the skipper and founder of Ewii Racing, which competes in the World Match Racing Tour. Høgh-Christensen is a four-time Olympian in the singlehanded Finn class and won a silver medal at London 2012.
SailGP chief executive Sir Russell Coutts said: “Denmark has achieved remarkable success in Olympic sailing and will now compete at the top level against the best sailors from six other nations in incredibly high tech, foiling, wingsailed catamarans. In addition, it’s fantastic to welcome Rockwool as the main partner of the Denmark SailGP Team.
“This is probably one of the most exciting developments in Danish sailing for many years as it provides a new pathway for top young sailors who aspire to race professionally for their country.”
The 2020 SailGP season gets underway in Sydney, Australia in February. The series’ second season will also incorporate events in San Francisco, New York City and the Isle of Wight, with other venues to be announced by the end of January.
