RFK Stadium, the dilapidated former home of the NFL Washington Redskins, MLB Washington Senators and Nationals, and MLS team DC United, is to be demolished by 2021.
Events DC, the agency that manages the 47,000-seater stadium in Washington, DC, said the 58-year-old facility, which costs $3m a year to maintain, has “exceeded its useful life”.
Since DC United left for Audi Field in 2017, it has held few events and has proven a financial burden to the city.
Contractors are being sought to facilitate the demolition process. It is unclear if the seats or other parts of the stadium will be auctioned off.
The Redskins are currently planning to leave their current venue FedEx Field when the lease expires in 2027 but it remains unclear if a planned new arena would be built on the site of RFK Stadium.
