Experienced media industry executive Rajesh Sethi has been appointed by the NBA to lead its operations in India.
From September 12, Sethi will be managing director of NBA India, overseeing the league’s basketball and business development initiatives in the country, and reporting to NBA deputy commissioner and chief operating officer Mark Tatum.
Sethi joins the NBA from Indian business conglomerate Essel Group, where he held leadership roles at several subsidiaries, including sports television broadcaster Ten Sports, and Ten’s parent Zee Entertainment. He was chief executive of Distribution and Sports Business at Zee, and chief executive of Ten Sports. Zee sold Ten Sports to Sony Pictures Networks India in 2016. Since 2017, Sethi has been chief business transformation officer of cable television platform SITI Networks.
Earlier in his career, Sethi held executive roles at insurer Allianz Global, conglomerate General Electric, and automotive manufacturer Tata Motors.
In a press release, the NBA’s Mark Tatum said: “Rajesh’s extensive experience in the media and broadcast industry combined with his leadership and management abilities make him the ideal person to lead our efforts in India.”
Sethi said: “The league has done a wonderful job of growing its presence in India, and I look forward to working with all our partners and colleagues here as we explore new ways to increase basketball participation and engagement.”
