Organisers of the Race of Champions have shortlisted venues in Barbados, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Qatar, Sweden and the US as they aim to return the event to the motorsport calendar in 2014.
The Race of Champions gathers the leading stars from a variety of motorsport series and organisers have opened a fan vote via the event’s official website in a bid to determine the 2014 host. Amongst the prospective European hosts are the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, England; the Stade de France in Paris, France; the Friends Arena in Stockholm, Sweden and German venues the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt and Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart. The Stade de France previously hosted the Race of Champions from 2004 to 2006.
The Qatari capital of Doha is also listed as a potential host city, along with Bushy Park Circuit in Barbados; the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas and 2014 Fifa World Cup final venue the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Today’s announcement comes after organisers in May abandoned plans to reschedule the 2013 edition of the event after they were unable to find an alternate date. The 2013 Race of Champions was originally scheduled to take place in Bangkok’s Rajamangala Stadium on December 14-15, but political unrest in the Thai capital led to the event being cancelled.
The Sports Authority of Thailand, along with event organisers, had hoped to rearrange the event but abandoned efforts due to date clashes with the 2014 motorsport calendar and the political situation in Bangkok.
