Qatar extends deal to host Fiba 3×3 All Stars

The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) has extended a deal with Fiba, the sport’s global governing body, to continue hosting the Fiba 3×3 All Stars event.

The renewal will run for five years, from 2016 to 2020.

The Fiba 3×3 All Stars is the season-ending event of the three-a-side format of basketball.

The first edition was staged in the Qatari capital of Doha in 2013, with Slovenian team Brezovica claiming the trophy. The 2014 edition took place in Katara on the outskirts of Doha, with Serbian team Novi Sad emerging triumphant.

The past two editions of the event have also included school and hospital visits as well as clinics for referees and young players.

The 2015 edition on December 11 in Al Gharafa will feature some new activities, including the Fiba 3×3 Gala Dinner and the Fiba 3×3 Awards, where the discipline’s best players and organisers will be honoured.

“We are delighted to renew our partnership with the Qatar Basketball Federation,” Fiba secretary general Patrick Baumann said. “Thanks to H.E. Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani's visionary leadership, the QBF has been a pioneer in the development of 3×3, not only winning the 2014 Fiba 3×3 World Championships but also establishing the Fiba 3×3 All Stars as one of the most prestigious Fiba 3×3 events in the world.”

QBF President Sheikh Saoud added: “The event has quickly become a local favourite and shows the unlimited potential of 3×3 basketball. Signing until 2020 is the symbol of the great plans we have for the young urban discipline. We hope it [2020] is the year 3×3 is played for the first time at the Olympic Games.”
